CLINICAL AND ETIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF MALIGNANT ASCITES WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SAAG CRITERIA AND BIOLOGICAL MARKERS

Objective: The aim and objective of the study are to analysis various patterns malignant ascites (MA) in our setup. Methods: This prospective observational was conducted from November 2008 August 2010 Postgraduate Department General Medicine, S.C.B. Medical College, Cuttack. Diagnosed patients with due malignancy (intra-abdominal or extra-abdominal) were enrolled into study. A thorough history clinical examination recorded. Patients underwent abdominal paracentesis first 24 h after admission. Ascitic fluid obtained left lower quadrant samples sent for biochemical, cytological, microbiological analysis. Results: Among 62 patients, male predominance 71% mean age presentation 55±20.5 years. Histopathological revealed cells 32 cases their ascitic classified as MA peritoneal carcinomatosis. In 30 negative malignant-related (MRA). most common cancers causing gastric (62.5%) followed by ovarian (25%). frequently associated MRA hepatobiliary (53.3%) (13.3%) cancers. Biomarkers positive total cases. All carcinomatous peritonitis demonstrated a low (<1.1 mg/dL) serum ascites-albumin gradient (SAAG) all had high SAAG (>1.1 mg/dL). Conclusion: incidence 51.61% 48.39%, highest seen elderly males. diagnostic differentiating an accuracy 100%.
